Greater Kruger Alley Cat Initiative (GKACI) is a non-profit organisation based in the town of Hoedspruit, South Africa. We live and work in one of the worlds most famous wildlife havens.

The aim of our project is to actively control the feral domestic cat populations through Trap, Neuter and Release programmes (TNR) to protect and conserve the African wildcat whilst minimising cruelty to domestic and feral cats.

You Can
Get Involved.

GKACI is run solely by volunteers and funded on donations alone. We rely on donations to cover Vet bills, maintenance and purchasing of humane trapping cages, feeding stations and cat food. We benefit from working as a community, volunteering your time is just as valuable, or why not hold an event in your area to raise awareness, and funds!

How Do Humane
Cat Traps Work?

Catching feral cats is much like American cops shows on a stake out, with less doughnuts. A lot of setting up then waiting in cars or behind a dumpster. The traps that we use to capture the feral cats are specially designed for purpose. They are baited with fresh food to attract the cats in waiting for them to come and take the bait requires a great deal of patience. There are two types of trap that we use, one is smaller and has a system whereby the cat takes a bite of the delicious food and the door snaps closed behind them. The other is a larger trap with a stick on a string that runs back to us as we hide from site. As a cat enters the cage to get to the food we pull the string and presto, (unless a very fast kitty) we catch hem. This allows for the team to then transfer them from the trap to a comfortable carry box to then transport to one of our wonderful vets for neutering.
